MAA President's Message

May/June Message

As I sit here writing this message it’s the first 70-degree day of the year; while yesterday I woke up to it snowing.  For many of us the change of seasons means it’s time to roll over our databases and start our fieldwork.  For the Conference Committee it means finalizing plans for the Annual Conference.

This year marks the 50th Annual Conference and your Conference Committee is hard at work to make this a fun filled and educational Conference.  Our goal is to have registration out to the membership by the middle of May.  This year the Conference will be held at Shanty Creek Resort on August 14 through 17.

One of the mainstays of every conference is the Awards Breakfast.  I would like to encourage you to nominate your fellow assessors for an award.

Surprisingly, the Awards Committee struggles every year to receive nominations.  So let your voice be heard and take part in your organization by making a nomination.  Nominations can be made for the following areas:

  • Most Valuable Member Award (Ernest “Ernie” Beren Award)
  • Literary Award (Frank Moss Award)
  • Education Award (David Bone Award)
  • Michigan Property Tax Achievement Award
  • Distinguished Assessment Jurisdiction Award
  • Subscribing Member Award (David M. Heinowski Award)

For a full description of each award and past recipients please refer to the “Awards” section of the MAA Website.

In other news, did you know the MAA is now offering a virtual option to attend our monthly meetings?  If you haven’t attended any of our meetings, I would encourage you to do so.  While we would certainly like to see you in person, the virtual option may be more appealing to you.  Links to the meetings and a meeting schedule can be found on the Home Page of our website.

Attending meetings is not only a way to get involved to your organization but also a way to learn what is going on in the many different areas of assessment administration, such as the STC and legislation that is being introduced.  Engagement with the MAA and any local assessing organizations leads to, not only the success of the organization and our profession, but also the success of you as an assessment professional!

Best regards,
Tony Meyaard, President

CAMA Data Standards

State Tax Commission

At their meeting on December 14, 2021, the State Tax Commission approved the revised CAMA Data Standards dated December 14, 2021 and the Standards Regarding Factors, Forms, Fractions, Multipliers, Ratios, Rates and Rounding.  The documents are attached and available on the State Tax Commission's website at:  www.michigan.gov/statetaxcommission.

The revisions to the CAMA Data Standards include the Codes for Taxable Status, the Study Type Codes for use with Forms L-4018R and L-4018P, Define Terms of Sale and Sales Verification.

The STC CAMA Data Standards Committee will continue research in coordination with the Michigan Assessors Association (MAA) and the Michigan Association of Equalization Directors (MAED) into the development of possible new standards for future implementation for assessor change reasons, adjustment change reasons and use codes.  The Standards Committee of MAA and MAED will hold a joint work session on January 6, 2022.  If you have ideas or suggestions related to assessor change reasons, please contact your MAA or MAED representatives.

Questions may be sent by email to:  State-Tax-Commission@michigan.gov.
