MAA President's Message

September Message

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year - I love the cooler temperatures, the harvests, the smell of fall baking and, of course, the colors that are just around the corner! It also means that snow isn't far off. For us, as Assessors, it typically means getting busy! This year will be no exception -
With the August primaries past us, we now know who the candidates for Governor, and other local offices, are. It is time for us to get to know them - find out where they stand on issues and perhaps take some time to educate them about things that affect us. I think this is very important this year with the Assessing Reform proposal, and I hope you will make some time to get to know these people and share our concerns with them.

During August, Treasurer Khouri, Senator Stamas and Representative Lower held public input sessions for stakeholders to learn the concerns of those they had not yet heard from regarding these policy changes. This month - September, they will be working with stakeholders on revising the bill language in a way that the stakeholders can agree. MAA is committed to working with Treasury and the legislators on this and feel, that while we cannot support the bills as currently written, we should work towards revisions that we can support. Ruth Scott, Donna VanderVries, Manny Lentine and I will continue to keep the communications on these efforts open so you, our members, know what is happening.
MAA's Fall school is nearly upon us - it is being held October 1-5 at Boyne Mountain. If you haven't completed your continuing education for the year, or need classes to advance your certification - check out the offerings on the MAA website. You should also know that the Board is hoping to have a complete schedule available for next year's education after the 1st of the year 2019. We hope that this will help our members know what MAA is offering in terms of certification classes, as well as assist with budgeting and planning for continuing education.

As always, if you have concerns or questions about what is going on with MAA, please contact your District Representatives.
Here's to a productive Fall for all of us!
